Sound Devices PIX 220i firmware - (v3.53) provides the following new features, changes, and/or fixes.

Sony File Name Format for Sony PMWF55 (240(i) Only)
New Sony File Format naming option available in Main Menu>File Storage>File Name Format. When selected and the incoming SDI signal source is the Sony PMWF55, the PIX 240(i) generates files that follow the same naming convention used by F55 camera.
The PIX 240(i) extracts the Camera ID, Reel number, and Camera position and names the files accordingly and uses this information to create a reel folder.
The Sony PMWF55 has two options for file naming:
- CamID and Reel (supported).
- Title (unsupported).
When set to Cam ID and Reel the naming convention is:
[Camera ID][Reel Number][Camera Position][Clip Number]_[YYMMDD][UniqueID].
The PIX 240(i) file names will be identical to the F55’s and they will be placed in a Reel folder derived from the Sony F55’s CamID and Reel.
- Non-alphanumeric characters are blocked from use in DRIVE, REEL and SCENE. (220(i)/240(i)).
- Fixed incompatibility with some AVID workstations where AVID would report Hagrid Base Error when loading AMA Linked 220(i)/240(i)-generated DNxHD files. (220(i)/240(i)).
- The PIX is now more forgiving when mounting media with corruption. In some cases, depending on the level of corruption, the PIX would show drives as "No Fmt". A common cause of this sort of corruption was termination of the data connection during a write cycle when the drive was connected to a computer. Drives with this sort of corruption will now mount correctly but the corrupted file(s) may not playback correctly or the PIX may report them as corrupted. (220(i)/240(i)).
- Unacceptable levels of noise on embedded audio channels 1 and 2 at the SDI output when recording standard definition video. (240(i)).
- Leading or trailing spaces in Reel names would make the folders invisible to Mac OS. (220(i)/240(i)).
- Various improvements and system enhancements for stability and usability. (220(i)/240(i)).
Any PIX 240(i) recorded files from any version newer than 3.50 cannot be played back in PIX 240(i)/PIX 220(i) v3.03 or earlier.
The change is due to a new enhanced QuickTime structure in the PIX 240(i)'s Firmware (v3.50 and newer), which enables the recording of dynamic metadata (metadata that changes from frame to frame).

- Fixed AVID AMA-linking ‘EXCEPTION: Failed to get the sample position from the AMA plugin.’ bug. This could appear towards the end of clip playback or when consolidating odd length files.
- Pillar Box and Zoom 14:9 setting names swapped so that the setting name correctly matches the selected conversion.

3.50 - Posted March 5, 2014
- Added option for long duration event recording with no file splits - Splits Disabled (10 Hours Max).
- Added automatic file recovery in the event of total power loss during recording. Maximum last 30 seconds lost.
- Added support for Canon C300 3:2 pull down mode.
- Added options for displaying thinner audio meters in various parts of the main screen (top, left, bottom, right) so that more of the video image can be seen.
- Added Record/Playback of camera movement/tracking data via HD-SDI including camera position, pan, tilt, roll, focus distance. Supports SMPTE S315M metadata specification.
- PIX 240(i) Only - Added support for Source Identification (SID) metadata to enable large scale productions to identify source video streams. This SID metadata is transmitted in the SDI stream ancillary data space as defined in SMPTE 291M from devices such as the Alpermann+Velte Rubidium Series. The PIX 240(i) extracts and records this SID metadata into the QuickTime file structure so that it can be played back from the PIX 240(i)'s SDI output. Note: This enhanced metadata support has required changes to the QuickTime structure.
- PIX 240(i) Only - Added 24h Run timecode mode which automatically loads the time of day into the accurate timecode generator. Saves having to jam TOD manually.
- PIX 240(i) Only - Added Free Run Auto Mute and 24h Run Auto Mute timecode modes. The 'Auto Mute' modes are the same as the Free run and 24h modes, but mute the LTC timecode output when stopped. This can be used to roll external devices when Rec run timecode is not suitable e.g. multi-cam shoots.
- PIX 240(i) Only - Added new Ext TC (LTC Halt) mode. If unit is set to record trigger from rolling timecode then the unit will now stop if the incoming signal disappears. This is useful when triggering from devices that do not output stationary code when stopped.
- Added support for wireless mini USB keyboard remote control, Rii, RT-MWK01.
- DNxHD codec optimizations for even greater image detail.
- Now loads the last recorded take after power up.
- IMPORTANT CHANGES introduced in firmware 3.50 prevents files recorded on firmware revision 3.50 or higher from playing back on PIX recorders running firmware earlier than 3.50.
- Random speckle artifacts when doing a PsF to P conversion with high motion material.
- Non-seamless audio at file splits.
- USB keyboard Lock Ups.
- Rare issue where certain ProRes files would flash during playback.

- New: Ability to start and stop recording from external, record-run timecode while the timecode mode of the PIX recorder is set to freerun or 24hr run timecode mode. This is useful when working with cameras that only support SDI timecode but not SDI start/stop flags and when the application calls for free-run timecode rather than rec-run timecode (i.e. any application where multiple devices are TC jammed).
- Change: Drop frame timecode is displayed with semi-colon between second and frames field.
- Change (PIX 240): Freerun timecode backup when all power is removed reduced to 2 hours.

1.0 - Initial Release
Please read and follow the steps below carefully. You may want to print them before upgrading firmware.
Sound Devices recommends backing up any existing data that may reside on the recorder. While no data on the storage is changed during the update process, it is best practice to back up the unit. It is also highly recommended to save the current device settings since a firmware update can result in settings changing to factory default.
Prepare to Update
- Download the firmware.zip file.
Note: Some web browsers (most notably, Safari) will open certain files automatically while downloading them. Doing so has caused corruption with archive files including .zip files. Sound Devices recommends to either use a browser that does not do this, or to disable the feature before downloading.
- From the zip archive, extract the .prg file.
- Copy the .prg file to the root level of an SSD in a PIX-CADDY, CF memory card or HDD. The card or SSD must be formatted as an exFAT volume. (The storage medium should be formatted by PIX.)
- Power the recorder from external DC. Do not perform the update with an unstable power source.
- Insert the SSD, CF card or HDD with the .prg file.
- Power on the recorder.
- Once booted, push the MENU button to open the Main Menu. Turn the Control knob to highlight System, and then press the Control knob to select it.
- Turn the Control knob to highlight Update Software, and then press the Control Knob to select it.
- Once a prg has been selected, you will need to reconfirm that the file selected is the correct one. Select Yes to proceed with the firmware update or select No to exit the Software Update. The unit will take a few minutes to update the firmware, indicating its progress. When the update is finished, the unit will present a dialog indicating it will shut down. Accept this dialog to complete the update process.
- Review settings after updating.
Note: Should problems occur during the update process, then PIX Loader can be used to update the unit.
Applying Update Using PIX Loader Software
- If you haven't previously done so, Download the PIX Loader utility for Windows. Otherwise skip to step 2.
PIX_Loader_1.0_Install.exefrom the downloaded .zip file.
Extract the PIX_Loader_1.0_Install.exe from the downloaded .zip file.
- Double-click the installer to begin the installation process. A UAC (User Account Control) dialog may appear asking your permission to allow the installer to run. Allow it.
- The InstallShield wizard will guide you through selecting an install location and actually installing the Pix Loader utility. When finished, the PIX Loader utility will be located in the Windows Start Menu.
- Attach a fresh set of batteries or connect the PIX to external DC power. Do not perform the update with low batteries or unstable power sources.
Turn the PIX off.
- Using a USB standard A to mini-B cable, attach the mini-B plug to the jack on the PIX recorder labeled FACTORY and attach the standard A plug to a working standard A jack on the computer.
- Using a thin tool (a bent paperclip works well), carefully push the button recessed within a hole adjacent to the FACTORY jack on the PIX. The PWR LED on the front of the PIX will illuminate amber.
- Open the PIX Loader software.
- Press the Browse button and locate the .prg file. Highlight the file and press Open.
- Press the Program button to begin the update. Do not remove any cables or close the PIX Loader utility until this process is complete.
- When the utility is finished, unplug the USB cable from the PIX recorder and remove the power. The firmware is now updated.
- Review settings after updating.
